The Perl application is an open source, free, and highly dynamic interpreted scripting language used for CGI script in Web development. Popularly known as Practical Extraction and Reporting Language, this application was developed by Larry Wall for processing report or text manipulation in Unix programming language. Structurally, it is a combination of C, shell scripting (sh), AWK, Lisp, and sed languages. It uses dual procedural and object-oriented programming interface like Visual basic and PHP. A Perl script is a one or two statements of text file created in a text editor with a PL file extension. These Perl scripts are interpreted by the Perl interpreter and if there are no syntax errors then it is executed. This software is readily available in Unix and can be downloaded for Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems. For better software compatibility Active Perl was developed for cross platform applications and Strawberry Perl was developed for Microsoft Windows users.
