It is a file format used for a three-dimensional object containing 3D coordinates (polygon lines and points), texture maps, and other object information. It contains a standard 3D image format that can be exported and opened by several 3D image editing programs. Object files can be in ASCII format (.obj) or binary format (.mod) however does not contain color definitions for faces. Because of their format, they are human readable. It supports both polygonal objects and free-form objects. Polygonal geometry uses points, lines, and faces to define objects while free-form geometry uses curves and surfaces. Wavefront

Wavefront

Wavefront is an animation software developed by Wavefront Technologies Company in 1984 for the production of computer graphics for television commercials, movies, and to market their own software through commercial projects. Eventually, it was purchased by Silicon Graphics in 1995 and merge with Alias Research to form Alias/Wavefront. Their goal is to create more advanced digital tools by combining the strengths and reducing duplication of the companies. Wavefront released desktop workstation interface in 1988, and then released the Data Visualizer in 1989, a scientific visualization commercial tool. Afterwards, Composer was introduced in 1991 which became a 2D and 3D compositing standard for films and televisions. Two new animation tools was then released in 1992, a new animation tool that worked with the Advanced Visualizer. In 1994, Wavefront partnered with Atari in developing GameWare game development software while rival Alias made a deal with Nintendo in the same year. Wavefront software was also designed to be learned by a non-technical person.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .obj files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .obj. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
