File type: Squash FS Bootable File
You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .sqfs. Files with the file extension .sqfs can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .sqfs files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .sqfs file?

Squash FS Bootable Files or files that refer to the bootable disk images used for UNIX. SquashFS is a Linux operated compressed read-only file system wherein the purpose of this application is for read-only use; archive use, especially with formats like .tar and .gz; as well as for constrained block devices needing low overhead like embedded systems. Since SQFS files are bootable disk image files, they act as physical disks which can be mounted and since Squashfs is a compressed read-only file system, the SQFS files happen to be formatted in a compressed read-only format as well. SQFS files are needed when installing files for operating systems; which is why they are mostly found in installers such as the Linux LiveCD installer that uses “livecd.sqfs” as its bootable disk image name. These files are mostly run in the Linux operating system and opened mainly with Linux installation with Squash FS support.

how to open a .sqfs file?

Launch a .sqfs file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .sqfs file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .sqfs files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .sqfs file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .sqfs file will open the correct application. Linux installation with Squash FS support

Linux installation with Squash FS support

Linux installation with SquashFS support is the LZMA. It is the name of the compression algorithm that can be used to achieve better compression with SquashFS. SquashFS is a compressed, read-only file system for Linux that compresses files, directories, inodes, and supports block sizes up to 1 MB for greater compression. It is intended for use in constrained block or device memory systems like embedded systems, and for general read-only file systems. LZMA improves the performance of SquashFS by better compression, which provides at least 5% reduction of the file system. The downturn of this application is that the decompression is slower than zlib. To obtain a mksquashfs that supports LZMA requires editing of the squashfs-tools Makefile to enable LZMA support. There are comments in the Makefile that will assist inbuilding LZMA support into Mksquashfs/ Unsquashfs. Once the application has been built-in, LZMA support can be specified by using the –comp lzma option.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .sqfs files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .sqfs. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
