The MapGuide Viewer is a web-based and a stand-alone program that allows users to develop and use web mapping applications. Its interactive viewer offers property inspection, map tips and feature selection. It uses an XML database to administer and control content. It creates data in file formats such as Spatial Index Files (SIF) and Spatial Data files (SDF). These files are then transmitted on the Internet to provide map information. It can read date from HTML pages and in various programming languages including Visual Basic, Java and C++. The program may be used in both Windows and Linux environment. This is an open source software and developed by the community. MapGuide supports IIS web servers and Apache. It also makes use of .Net, Javascript APIs and Java for software development. It can work on different browsers including Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera but it works best with Internet Explorer.
