what is a .vscontent file?

Files using the .vscontent extension are Visual Studio Content Files developed by Microsoft. Visual studio allows users to create Windows applications as well as applications that can be used by other OS. These files are used to describe Visual Studio package content. With this, they include the filename, the description, the file’s content version, the name, as well as the file type. These files are also useful in visual Studio item descriptions. Along with the component files, these .vscontent files are usually compressed into one archive; usually compressed with .zip. When users change the archive .zip to .vsi, they can be altered into Visual Studio Content Installer files. There are also a variety of applications associated with this file extension and several applications used to open .vscontent files such as Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and 2008 versions, Microsoft® .NET Framework, VSContentInstaller.exe, etc. Users may also use .vscontent File Fixers in order to open these files even without Microsoft Visual Studio.

Microsoft Visual Studio

Microsoft Visual Studio

Microsoft Visual Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) produced by Microsoft. It has a code editor that supports syntax highlighting and code completion using IntelliSense for not only variables, functions and methods but also language constructs like loops and queries; includes a debugger that works both as a source-level debugger and as a machine-level debugger; includes a host of visual designers to aid in the development of applications and other tools. Visual Studio permits developers to write extensions for Visual Studio to expand its capabilities. These extensions are linked to Visual Studio and extend its functionality. Extensions come in the form of macros, add-ins, and packages. Macros represent repeatable tasks and actions that developers can write programmatically for saving, replaying, and distributing; add-ins gives access to the Visual Studio object model and can interact with the IDE tools; and packages can create designers and other tools, as well as integrate other programming languages.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .vscontent files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .vscontent. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
