.tex File Extension

Developer: N/A
File type: LaTeX Source Document
You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .tex. Files with the file extension .tex can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .tex files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .tex file?

Files in the .tex format are output text documents created using the LaTeX software, a word processing application. These output text documents can also be saved in the LTX extension. Files with the STY extension are on the other hand text documents containing definitions of specific page layout and text formatting elements integrated into the content of associated LTX or TEX files. Other users collaborating on the further improvement or development of a document presentation with the use of an LTX or TEX file can access the definitions stored in these STY files and can even leave their comments for others to see. To leave a comment in an STY file so other users can improve the styling attributes integrated into the content of the TEX or LTX documents being worked on as a group project, Texmaker can be used (by both Mac, Linus and Microsoft Windows users since this word processing application has versions for all three platforms) to open the STY file and write the percent symbol followed by their comments below the corresponding style definitions (these style definitions start with a backslash). There are other applications that can be used to open and view TEX or LTX files.

how to open a .tex file?

Launch a .tex file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .tex file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .tex files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .tex file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .tex file will open the correct application. proTeXT

ProTeXt was developed by Thomas Feuerstack that works with Windows operating system. This is available in four languages namely: German, Italian, French and English. The file size of the downloadable file is 750 MB. There are third party applications included in this downloadable file in CTAN website and those are MiKTeX, ConTeXt, Ghostscript and TeXnicCenter (now known as TeXstudio). Although, the use of TeXnicCenter is highly discourage by some users. These are some latex editors that can be combined together. In order to utilize ConTeXt in ProTeXt and MiKTeX the users must install a Perl (ActivePerl and Ruby) in the users’ operating system. LaTeX involves TeX and translation of XML and DocBook to PDF files. Thru understanding more about LaTeX, users can productively use ProTeXt. This is a freeware IDE (integrated development Environment) application that focuses in Latex creation and alteration. The latest version of ProText is 3.1 released last July 2012.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .tex files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .tex. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
