what is a .tbz2 file?

TBZ2 files are TAR and BZ2 compressed file archives. They are often located and accessed in UNIX systems. These files play a big part in the compression of files using Zip2 as well as other TAR archivers because they not only help in data archiving but also in data distribution over the internet. TBZ2 files are usually in a binary format and using these files, the compression of data requires the Burrows-Wheeler transform as well as the Huffman entropy coding. TBZ2 files serve as storage for a single file as they are usually combined with Tar files. These files can be opened by decompressing them first before extracting them from the archive they belong to. The Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe versions 2010 and 2011 are two main compressors that support TBZ2 files. These compressors are greatly powerful in shrinking files no matter what type of data it is whether they are text documents and photos and then share it over the internet.

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .tbz2. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
