The content of a StarCraft information table file is mainly used as a lookup table of text descriptions associated to certain objects, elements and units in the StarCraft video game. The StarCraft video game software was developed by Blizzard Entertainment as a role playing real-time strategy video game. In this game, players can command and develop units classified as Protoss, Terran and Zerg. These StarCraft information table files are implemented with text data formatting specifications used by the StarCraft video game to store text data in the TBL file format. These StarCraft information table files are also integrated with data encoding specifications used by the StarCraft video game software to save these game object text descriptions in the TBL format. These StarCraft information table files are affixed with the .tbl extension, and the StarCraft video game can be installed and used in computers running on Microsoft Windows-based systems, while Mac users can also install the StarCraft video game application, particularly the version developed for Mac platforms, to start playing the video game and to also implement support into the Mac system for these StarCraft information table files.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .tbl files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .tbl. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
