what is a .tardist file?

Archives developed by SGI for the distribution and installation of SGI UNIX-based IRIX system software are known as TARDIST files. These files can be found on web pages and upon clicking the link to the file, these files can be used to install the program. The TARDIST format can be opened using TAR utilities since it has similarities with the TAR format. A utility that belongs to the IRIX system called “inst” can be used to install TARDIST files wherein these files contain scripts that this IRIX system use to install the software. When the software is installed, managing it may require the use of a manager program used by SGI software. TARDIST files can be opened using GNU TAR, a program that allows users to create TAR archives. The IRIX inst can also open TARDIST files. It is an application used for the installation, upgrade and removal of software.

IRIX inst

IRIX inst

IRIXinst is the installation software distributed by Silicon Graphics to install, upgrade or remove IRIX, a UNIX based computer operating system for SGI workstation used to processes high end graphics for visual simulations, scientific applications, and 3D animation. Some computer programs are executed by copying and storing them into a folder. Other programs, however, are not suitable for immediate execution and require an installation procedure. The installer contains the specific programs to install and run the required operating system following a set of operations. Initial installation procedures include verification of system requirements and existing versions of the software, and the updating of program files and folders. After performing pre-installation checks, the configuration data are added, automatically run components are configured, and execution commands are done to activate the program. The most common form of installation requires a user who specifies installation location, supplies passwords, and accepts or declines the end-user license agreement (EULA).

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .tardist files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .tardist. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
