what is a .sna file?

When backup software is used such as Drive Snapshot, it usually uses a virtual disk format for the creation of differential backups. This format refers to the backup files used by Drive Snapshot, which are the SNA files. Backup files like SNA files are used to create backups or copies of files contained in a computer. They help set aside all the important files user’s need to save either for the purpose of transferring these files into another computer or for the purpose of keeping these files safe when the computer is corrupted and needs to be reformatted. These files save important documents so they can still be accessed even if a different computer is used. SNA files opened using the Drive Snapshot program are mounted like physical disks which is why they are called virtual disk format. SNA files are also usually known as the primary backup files while SN1 and SN2 file extensions are used as differential backups.

Tom Ehlert Drive Snapshot

Tom Ehlert Drive Snapshot

Drive Snapshot is a disk imaging software program developed by Tom Ehlert Software & Consulting. It allows users to backup, restore, and view the backed up files or directories from any destination. Backed up file is stored in what the program creates as a virtual drive, from where users may retrieve and view data. While backup operation is in progress, users may still work normally on their PCs without interruption. When restoring a drive, using either Windows or DOS, data is restored to its original form. This process, however, is not possible when the drive is in use. Therefore, the restoration process has to be finished for data to be brought to its original state. Drive Snapshot is compatible with PCs run on Windows NT or higher, with disk space of 2MB. It also supports Linux. Execution of this program requires administrative rights.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .sna files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .sna. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
