PGP Secret Key Rings or files containing the ASCII armored private keys used to decrypt encrypted PGP or Pretty Good Privacy files. SEC files are produced by the PGP Corporation wherein the PGP software is popular software for the protection of information as well as sharing this information through the internet. The program is also helpful when it comes to communicating safely via email and it is mostly used by human rights organizations wherein confidential information is kept. Even private individuals having confidential information to keep can also use PGP to lock their files. PGP encrypted files can be decoded with the use of SEC files so that the encrypted files can be accessed and read. SEC files are called key files or secret key rings which mean that without these files, it is impossible to decode the encrypted files containing important information locked using the Pretty Good Privacy application. Both Windows and MAC OS can open SEC files.

PGP Desktop

PGP Desktop

PGP Desktop (Pretty Good Privacy Desktop) is a comprehensive suite of encryption and decryption applications that provide cryptographic privacy and data authentication. This suite of applications protects the confidentiality of data stored on a computer disk when the program is not active and provides pre-boot authentication to unlock the encrypted disk. The encryption process makes use of a serial combination of data compression, hashing, symmetric-key cryptography and public-key cryptography, with each public key bound to a single user or email address. It supports message integrity checks that detect whether a message has been altered, and authentication through verification of digital signature to determine if the correct sender sent the message. It is often employed for signing, decrypting and encrypting files, texts, emails, directories, and whole disk partitions to increase the security of email communications. This application can be used on laptop and desktop computers as well as USB or other external drives.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .sec files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .sec. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
