Developer: IBM
File type: Rich Text Editor File

what is a .ort file?

Files with the ORT extension are created and can be opened using the Rich Text Editor application developed by IBM. Similar to RTF (Rich Text Format) files, these generally consist of blocks of text that may include specific formatting attributes. IBM has integrated their Rich Text Editor application as the default word processor and text editor of their other software programs, mostly Web applications. A popular IBM Web application integrated with the Rich Text Editor program, which means it can also access and use ORT files, is IBM WebSphere Portal. These ORT files primarily serve as backup copies of data that can be used to recover the pieces of data stored in these ORT files at the event of an unexpected expiration of a server session. This means the Web applications of IBM use these ORT files to log specific pieces of data relevant to the server session that has unexpectedly expired, in order to later access these logs and correct possible errors.

IBM Rich Text Editor

IBM Rich Text Editor

Rich Text Editor is the default document editor in IBM Lotus Quickr application. It is a lightweight text-editing feature that productively functions for saving and editing of documents. The default key sequences used in Rich Text Editor are: [ctrl+shift+M] for lauch detached toolbar, [ctrl+shift+H] for launch help, [ctrl+shift+P] for lauch image insert, [ctrl+shift+G] for launch text color chooser, [ctrl+shift+J] for lauch background color chooser and [ctrl+shift+T] for launch table insert. These default key command sequences are configurable by the administrator. To customize the key commands, edit the file “KeySequences.properties” in the “quickr_server_root/shared/app/com/ibm/wps/odc/editors” directory. You have to restart your server for the changes to take effect after editing the commands. When saving a document you created using Rich Text Editor in Firefox browser, you should click OK when the warning window pops up with the message “Click OK to continue” to save the document. Do not click X. Some troubleshooting guidelines for using Rich Text Editor include Arabic language editing> the cursor goes to the left when pressing space key. Another is when Rich Text Editor is not the default text editor. For this, you have to configure a browser to launch an alternative text editing application automatically. Without configuration, you need to save the file to local computer for editing. Pop-up blockers prevent documents from being saved in the Rich Text Editor. You need to add the host site to your list of sites allowing pop-ups before opening the document in Rich Text Editor. There is a limitation with the Find and Replace function when using Rich Text Editor in Firefox browser. To Match whole words when searching for content is not available. It is only available in other browsers. When you are currently working on a document in Rich Text Editor and the server or browser abruptly closes, you may recover the file from the temporary storage if your document has already been saved previosuly. The path is similar to this: app_server_root\profiles\Profile_Name\temp\server_cell_name\server_type\odc\RichTextEditor.war\cds\Session_Id\Filename.ort

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .ort files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .ort. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
