The Macromedia Design Note is stored in the MNO format and is affixed with MNO file extension and is used by various web development tools such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Contribute. These MNO files are generally classified as data files that contain Web document information such as file author, status, file type, document name, description of the file and other user-defined data. They are XML files that keep information in a series of key/value pairs. The key describes the type of information that is being stored, and the value represents the information. Keys are limited to 64 characters. In simpler terms, they comprise the main filename plus the .mno extension. For instance, the Design Notes file that is associated with avocado8.gif is avocado8.gif.mno. These files are created in the site's notes folder and can be viewed using the systems file management tool. The Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 and Adobe Contribute CS5 software can be used in Mac and Microsoft Windows based systems to access and view MNO files.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mno files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .mno. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
