what is a .mdb file?

Files that are known as Microsoft Access Database files created using Microsoft Access are saved using the MDB file extension which is why they are known as MDB files. These files are categorized as database files because they mostly contain the structure of databases, the entries and forms, the queries, the reports, the settings of the database security as well as the stored procedures which means that they do not only contain the actual data in a database file but they also contain technical data and structures especially the tables and the fields usually present in databases. It is possible to import MDB files to other programs such as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. They can also be accessed using MySQL and Oracle application since MDB files also follow the Open DataBase Connectivity standard. However, MDB files are mainly accessed using Microsoft Access by which it is only available on Windows operating systems even though it comes with some Microsoft Office software packages.

Microsoft Access 2010

Microsoft Access 2010

Microsoft Access 2010 is one of the several versions of Microsoft Access that was released in the market with the goal of providing its users with a DBMS that can combine the Microsoft Jet Database Engine with tools being used for software development together with a GUI. It allows its users to use VBA in writing together with user control and manipulation of data. It has a feature which allows the exporting and importing of various formats including dBase, Paradox, Oracle, FoxPro, Outlook, ASCII, and Excel among the other formats available. It has the capacity to link to the data being used in its current location which can be used for different purposes such as editing, reporting, viewing and querying. It uses the format Jet Database which has the ability of containing the data and the application in just a single file.
SAS Institute SAS

SAS Institute SAS

Many users call the set of applications that were developed by SAS Institute as "SAS Institute SAS", but these computer programs are in fact different applications used for business analytics purposes. SAS Institute is a software company that develops applications for the business industry, and most of these programs are useful for generating and storing statistical and numerical data from database software also created by SAS Institute. Other popular database applications are also supported by some of the business analytics programs from SAS Institute, and most of these applications are compatible with computers running on Microsoft Windows systems. Most SAS Institute/SAS applications are also integrated with functionalities that give users the ability to incorporate simple to complex mathematical calculations into the numerical and statistical business analytics information exported from supported database applications.
Wolfram Research Mathematica

Wolfram Research Mathematica

Mathematica is more than the cross-platform computational software conceived by Stephen Wolfram and developed by Wolfram Research. It's the ultimate high-performance computing engine made up of different applications widely used in academic research, programming and software development, engineering, applied mathematics, and other specialized fields in science and technology. The latest version of Mathematica has expanded its functionality with the Wolfram Predictive Interface, which has more than 400 additional capabilities. These include a full suite of social network analysis tools, advanced image processing algorithms, and a context-sensitive input assistant. Mathematica employs a hybrid numerical-symbolic computing approach to analyzing problems and finding solutions. It makes use of automation to increase productivity in key areas of computing, visualization, and development. In essence, it's an all-in-one platform that supports programming languages that follow different paradigms, provides community support with a built-in knowledge base, and implements a document-based workflow.
Freewind MDB Converter

Freewind MDB Converter

The Freewind MDB Converter can open and view Microsoft Access database files saved in the default MDB format and convert them as TXT, CSV or XML files. These may be read and updated using spreadsheet software, which can restrict access to the files through password protection. This software also supports conversion of ACCDB files created by Microsoft Access 2007/2010 or a newer version. This file conversion tool is particularly useful when the end-user doesn't have Access installed. Moreover, users can export selected data from a table into a graphics file or convert several MDB files into different formats at the same time. Users may also schedule batches of MDB files for conversion. Freewind's MDB converter can handle conversions of extra large files, such as databases with more than 800,000 entries. Importing data from a CSV file has been successful with SQL and MySQL databases.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2012

Microsoft Visual Studio 2012

As of this writing, Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 is the latest release of this graphical application development tool. The previous version of this software has been improved in order to integrate software development functionalities that are supported by recent Web protocols and standards. Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 is also implemented with compatibility support for Windows 8, mobile systems and applications, SharePoint and cloud-based programs. Application lifecycle applets and project management tools are also included in Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, and these allow users to improve team project coordination efficiency through the significant reduction of cyclical redundancies. Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 also provides an improved Graphical User Interface (GUI) that makes it more convenient for application developers to create projects than with previous versions of this software.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mdb files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .mdb. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
