The Backus Normal Form or Backus-Naur Form (BNF) is a notation technique use in context-free grammars for interpreting the syntax of languages in computing. This includes computer programming languages, document formats, communication protocol and instructions set. The development of BNF started when the programming language designer in IBM, John Backus, proposed metalinguistic formulas using the BNF notation that will help in describing the syntax of the IAL programming language.
