what is a .kdbx file?

The data files created by KeePass Password Safe are known as KDBX files and they usually refer to the KeePass Password Database. These files contain passwords in an encrypted database wherein they can only be viewed if the user set a master password and accessed them through that master password. KDBX files are useful when it comes to the secure storage of personal login credentials for email accounts, e-commerce sites, Windows, FTP sites and other purposes. KDBX files are mostly introduced using KeePass version 2 because the previous versions usually use the KDB format. KeePass is a password manager that runs on several operating systems like Windows, MAC, Linux as well as other mobile devices. It is an application used as password storage wherein the passwords are locked inside a highly-encrypted database using a master key file. Even if older versions of KeePass use KDB files, they can still be used to open KDBX files.

KeePass Password Safe

KeePass Password Safe

KeePass Password Safe is free utility software for saving usernames and passwords and keeping them protected from phishers - people who steal login details and personal information. The database is accessible only through a master password or a key file, or a composite security control that combines both. The software uses Twofish and AES encryption to protect the database from hacking attempts. This utility was originally designed for Windows OS, but because its source code is freely available for downloads and modification, it has been ported into unofficial versions for Linux, Mac OS X, BSD and Mono operating systems. It has its own password generator that creates random codes made up of letters and numbers. It also works as a browser add-on for Firefox and a toolbar extension for Internet Explorer. In addition, it uses KeeForm as an automatic form-filler and a user profile manager.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .kdbx files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .kdbx. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
