.dl_ File Extension

Developer: Microsoft
File type: Compressed DLL File
You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .dl_. Files with the file extension .dl_ can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .dl_ files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.

what is a .dl_ file?

A compressed DLL file is saved in the DL_ format and is affixed with the .dl_ extension. These DL_ files can be created using the Makecab software, which implements compression and encoding standards proprietary to the DL_ format. This application is a Microsoft Windows utility that was developed for the compression and encoding of Dynamic Link Library (DLL) modules. These DL_ files are often used by Microsoft for reducing the file size of DLL modules stored in installation disks of Microsoft Windows systems and Microsoft Windows applications. Specific syntax codes can be used in the Makecab software to create a DL_ file. The decompression of these DL_ files can also be facilitated by the Makecab software with particular syntaxes to change the .dl_ extension to the .dll extension of these DL_ files. The Microsoft Expand software can also be installed and used on computers running on Microsoft Windows-based systems to implement support for the creation and decompression of these DL_ files.

how to open a .dl_ file?

Launch a .dl_ file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .dl_ file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .dl_ files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .dl_ file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .dl_ file will open the correct application. Microsoft Makecab

Microsoft Makecab

Microsoft Makecab is a lossless data compression tool from Microsoft Corporation. This method of filer compression allows the exact original file to be reconstructed from the compressed data. This is in contrast with the other method of file compression (lossy data compression) wherein the reconstructed file approximates the original. Important documents like source codes, executable programs, and text documents require lossless compression to avoid deviations and probable deletions from the original data. Microsoft MakeCab creates a single cabinet (.CAB or “Cabinet” files) for multiple compressed files, performs file compression across boundaries, and has a feature that allows files to span cabinets. CAB is the computer file extension that represents Microsoft compressed archive format. A feature called Folder allows MakeCab to compress into a single entity contents of several CAB files. Data compression methods allowed by the CAB file format are DEFLATE, LZX, and Quantum compression. Microsoft MakeCab supports self-extracting archives by simply concatenating EXTRACTEXE with any cabinet file.
Microsoft Expand

Microsoft Expand

Microsoft Expand is a command tool (Expand.exe) from Microsoft that is used to retrieve compressed files from distribution disks. It is a command from the recovery console that is used to extract a file or multiple files from a compressed file. The retrieved file is usually for the replacement of damaged files in the operating system. The command-line option in executing Expand follows the convention expand [-r] source [destination] [-d source.cab [-f:files]] [source.cab [-f:filesdestination]. The parameter [-r] renames the expanded files, [-d] displays the list of files in the compressed source, and [-f] specifies the .cab file for expansion. The destination for a the expanded file must be a directory and is composed of a drive letter and colon, a directory name, a file name, or a combination. Expand.exe supports opening of updates for early versions of Windows and Windows Vista, and can be used to examine updates for Windows Vista on a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating system.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .dl_ files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .dl_. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
