what is a .ctv3 file?

Files stored in the CTV3 format are affixed with the .ctv3 extension and are used as project data files by version 3 of the Citavi software. Swiss Academic Software developed the Citavi program as a Microsoft Windows application for storing and managing reference data. This means the content of a CTV3 project may include comments, notes, references and citation details entered by the author of the CTV3 project using the Citavi 3 software. Bibliographic indices can also be entered by users of the Citavi 3 program into their CTV3 project files. Microsoft Windows users can install the Citavi 3 program into their systems to open and access the data stored in a CTV3 file as well as to author a CTV3 project. Older versions of Citavi append the .ctv extension to project files created using this software, and this CTV file format was later updated to the CTV3 format by Swiss Academic Software.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .ctv3. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
