File type: TaxCut 2007 Tax Return

what is a .t07 file?

This file format is used by software called TaxCut (rebranded to H&R Block At Home for the 2009 tax year) developed by H&R Block e-solutions. It is used for the preparation of tax return forms for US based citizens. You can either access it via an online service or request that a DVD containing the software be mailed to you, with most people opting to do the former to avoid having to wait for the post and install software. The forms generated can be submitted directly to the IRS online or alternatively one can print them for mailing. The number at the end signifies the year for which the return is created. Returns generated with TaxCut can only be opened with the version of TaxCut which was used to create them in the first instance. So the file extension in question here is specifically for returns made for the year 2007.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .t07 files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .t07. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
