what is a .s7z file?

Compressed file archives using 7-Zip compression for MAC are in the s7z format wherein this format contains data specifically run by MAC such as spotlight metadata, resource forks as well as owner and group permissions. These data do not exist in Windows compression programs; which is why they are exclusively used by MAC OS. The s7z format’s main feature is the fact that it has an open architecture which makes it support different methods of compression as well. The format also features a high compression ratio, large file support, compression of archive headers and a lot more features. This is a compression format mainly used by 7-ZIP, a popular file archiver that allows users to decompress numerous archiving formats thereby capable of producing a high compression ratio. It is software developed by Igor Pavlov and the s7z files can be opened using the Sixty Five 7zX application which runs on MAC OS.

Sixty Five 7zX

Sixty Five 7zX

Sixty Five 7zX is freeware file archiver for Mac OS X from Sixty Five, Ltd. This program combines a number of files together in one archive file, or in a series of archive files to reduce data storage or for faster transmission. Its features include retaining OS X-specific information within archives, integration with the OS X Finder and Growl platform, and creation of self-extracting archives. As a self-extracting archive, it contains the archive file as well as the programming to extract this information. Because of the self-extracting feature, 7zX file archives do not require a second executable file or program to extract from the archive. It performs both archiving or packing, and unpacking or the reconstruction of the original files from the archive. Any user can extract 7zX files, as long as the program runs on their computer platform. This application also support gzip, tar, bzip2, UNIX compress, 7z, zip, s7z and various kinds of segmented archives.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .s7z files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .s7z. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
