what is a .pnt file?

Files affixed with the PNT extension refer to the images created through MacPaint. MacPaint is a software developed by Apple bundled inside Macintosh Computers and makes use of black and white bitmap based graphics. The program was launched in 1984 and was sold separately together with its counterpart the MacWrite. It was noticeable because it was the first of its kind to be able to generate graphics that can be used by other programs. PNT files can be cute from MacPaint and pasted to other applications. MacPaint was later on discontinued because of its diminishing sales. Files in the PNT format may be viewed and edited through its authoring software which is Apples’ MacPaint. Other Image viewers compatible with the PNT format may be used such as CorelDRAW Graphics Suite and XnView1.91.6. In the event that these software are not available on the user’s system, graphic converters may be used such as Lemkesoft’s GrapchiConverter.

Apple MacPaint

Apple MacPaint

Apple MacPaint was known to be a graphics painting software that is based on bitmap for the early versions of Mac computers during the 1980s. It was a popular program in creating graphics because it was usable by and for other applications too. It featured a QuickDraw picture language, clipboard for inserting images available on the program and ResEdit tool that enabled a user to cut and paste pictures from other software. This painting program was created by Bill Atkinson, who was among the pioneers of original Macintosh development group. It was first called as MacSketch but when Claris was created, it became MacPaint. It was released in December 1983 with 18-page brochure and the following year of January, the Macintosh was launched with two programs, which were MacWrite and MacPaint. MacPaint was then an integrated application on Macintosh computers. It was made with a single document interface with unalterable sizes and palette positions. As of today, MacPaint is no longer available.

Be careful not to rename the extension on .pnt files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .pnt. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
