Nero Burning ROM

Nero Burning ROM

Nero Burning ROM, popularly known as Nero, is an optical disc authoring program for Microsoft Windows by Nero AG, formerly Ahead Software, located in Germany. Versions 6 to 9 were a part of Nero Multimedia Suite. As of version 10, Nero Burning Rom is accessible as a stand-alone product. Nero Linux is the Linux version. It supports the making of ISO/UDF data discs, bootable discs, audio CD discs, DVD-Video discs, etc. Other functions include: ripping of audio CDs, converting audio files to other audio file formats, erasing rewritable discs, printing on discs with LightScribe and LabelFlash technology, and connection to the online music database Gracenote. It has a player for DVDs, video files, and audio files, an image viewer, and software to help out with production of DVDs and other multimedia content. This Nero Burning ROM Lite and OEM versions (with hardware purchase only) are cheaper, hardware specific, reduced functionality versions of Nero Burning ROM. Nero Burning ROM runs with numerous optical disc image formats, as well as the raw uncompressed image following the ISO9660 standard, and Nero's proprietary NRG file format. Depending on version more image formats may be natively supported. To utilize more formats, mainly lossless FLAC, Wavpack, and Shorten, it is basic to set up additional program modules. The modules, called plug-ins or codecs, are commonly freely available.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .nrd files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .nrd. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
