what is a .mpi file?

The MPI File extension is a data file format, and files affixed with the .mpi extension are known as InstallJammer project files. This file format was developed by InstallJammer Team, and the associated software allows developers to create installer executables for their applications, and metadata details and actions for the corresponding installation executables are also stored. This software features a very powerful install builder with support for multiple themes and a high level of configurability for installers. It also features a virtual text panel which contains virtual text and virtual directory definitions for the project. Virtual text defines the variables used in the project. Project files are saved using plain text formatting specifications and can be stored in source control systems to create comparative data when collaborating with other developers. Installers are built as single executable files for easy distribution, and these installation executables handle everything the user needs for installing the applications via these simple, cross-platform installers. This software is used for making installation executables for applications developed to run in Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac systems. The InstallJammer software is no longer in active development.

InstallJammer

InstallJammer

Damon Courtney developed InstallJammer for developers to use when creating an executable installer for their application. This application was distributed under a GNU Public License with the full source codes for all versions freely available for other developers to study and customize. The software functions in Windows as well as in any Linux distributions or most versions of UNIX. This install kit builder has a variety of themes for skinning the Installation Wizard. It can create self-extracting installers for Windows 98 and newer, FreeBSD, Linux x86 and x64, Solaris, HP-UX and AIX. The last stable version was released on October 2010. The Documentation and Developer Guide for this GUI software still exist online for developers to visit or download. Because it's an Open Source application, other software developers are free to use InstallJammer as a jump-off point for an expanded version with additional functions and a sleeker design.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mpi files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .mpi. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
