HotDocs utilize the HCL file format to save clause archive data files containing text templates or collection of clauses archived through the use of ZIP technology. These templates can be embedded in various forms commonly used in insurance and legal documents resulting to faster and more accurate documentation process. HCL files can be accessed through a library of clause files and clause archives filenames stored in HDL format. Accessing HDL files containing archived clauses in HCL format will automatically set off HotDocs decompression utility to extract archived clause files based on the requirements of the application.

how to open a .hcl file?

Launch a .hcl file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .hcl file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .hcl files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .hcl file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a  .hcl file will open the correct application. HotDocs is software which was developed by HotDocs Limited. It allows its users to convert different documents that were made using Word Perfect or Microsoft Word as well as those in PDF format into different types of templates. The templates that this software produces is in a form of question-and-answer interview which has the ability to produce customized as well as transaction-ready types of documents. This software allows its users to insert scripting commands as well as variables in the document which results to the creation of a HotDocs file component and a template. Document modelling which is one of HotDocs’ features can actually range from simple types of variable substitutions up to a more complex type of systems which involves recursions, logic, insertions among others. The scripting may also be added to the templates using different formats and can also be modified using a word processor.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .hcl files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
