You're here because you have a file that has a file extension ending in .gxl. Files with the file extension .gxl can only be launched by certain applications. It's possible that .gxl files are data files rather than documents or media, which means they're not meant to be viewed at all.
what is a .gxl file?
The GXL file extension is used as a data file format for graph exchange between programs. This file contains edges and nodes which represent user defined values or information presented in graphical format. It features XML attributes which allow fast and easy file sharing between applications with similar functionalities. Grapviz and jGraph software applications are among the many graph tools that can create and access GXL files. Grapviz features various graphical tools such as layout tabular nodes, hyperlinks, color options, line styles and fonts used to create and further enhance graphical presentation of data. This application saves created graphs in GXL file format which may contain abstract graphs and other diagram forms commonly used in bioinformatics, database and web design, machine learning, software engineering and other technical industries presented in graphical format. jGraph is a popular Java Graph Visualization Library that provides users with wide selection of graphical layouts which can be utilized to plot diagrams for mapping layers, computer networks and organizational charts. Graphical layouts created using this program are saved as GXL files.
how to open a .gxl file?
Launch a .gxl file, or any other file on your PC, by double-clicking it. If your file associations are set up correctly, the application that's meant to open your .gxl file will open it. It's possible you may need to download or purchase the correct application. It's also possible that you have the correct application on your PC, but .gxl files aren't yet associated with it. In this case, when you try to open a .gxl file, you can tell Windows which application is the correct one for that file. From then on, opening a .gxl file will open the correct application. Graphviz
Graphviz
Graphviz is a free, open-source graph visualization software. The current stable release for Graphviz Windows is Graphviz-2.28.0.msi. Graphviz represents structural data as diagrams of networks and abstract graphs. It has valuable applications in bioinformatics, networking, database and Web design, software engineering, visual interfaces of other technical domains and machine learning. The layout programs of Graphviz can take graph descriptions as simple text language and make useful diagram formats as SVG for Web pages, images and Postscript or PDF for other document inclusions, or it can display graphs through an interactive graph browser. Graphviz also supports GXL format. This software features options for fonts, tabular node layouts, colors, hyperlinks, line styles and Rolland custom shapes among others for its concrete diagrams. DOT format is used for layered or hierarchical drawings of directed graphs. “Spring model’ layouts in NEATO format are the default tools for graphs that are not too large [around 100 nodes]. NEATO aims to perform statistical multidimensional scaling by minimizing global energy function. Spring model layouts similar to NEATO but reduce forces instead of working on energy function use FDP format. SFDP is the multi-scale version of FDP for large graph layouts. TWOPI are radial layouts after Graham Wills 97. Nodes are located in concentric circles with their distance depending on a certain root node. CIRCO are circular layouts after Wiese 02, Kauffman and Six and Tollis 99. This type of layout is apt for multiple cyclic structure diagrams like telecommunications networks.
Be careful not to rename the extension on .gxl files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
what is a file extension?
A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .gxl. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
