what is a .dx file?
The DX file extension is used for a text file implemented by a DOS Processing program called DEC WPS. A DX file is considered only as plain text and usually contains document data. DOS is an acronym for Disk Operating System used by different operating systems from the year 1991 to 2000. Examples of these operating systems are MS-DOS, PC-DOS and 86-DOS. The origin of DOS begun with Digital Research’s CP/M (Control Program/Monitor), the main disk operating system for Zilog Z80 and Intel 8080 microcomputers. The introduction of IBM PC needed an operating system that is compatible with 8088-build of CP/M. IBM turned to Digital Research and Microsoft CEO Bill Gates for a possible negotiation of its CP/M requirement for an operating system. This negotiation did not prosper which later on lead to IBM having its own operating system named PC-DOS and Microsoft releasing its own version of an operating system called MS-DOS.

DEC WPS Plus
DEC WPS Plus
DEC WPS Plus is an application with a set of functionalities for viewing the content of documents that are used in certain devices from Digital Equipment Corporation. Generally classified as a document viewer and word processor, the DEC WPS Plus program is implemented with compatibility support only for older versions of widely used Microsoft Windows systems, because development and support for DEC WPS Plus has been discontinued as of this writing. These documents that are bundled with hardware devices from Digital Equipment Corporation are stored in the DEC file format, and these .dec files can be opened to view its contents using DEC WPS Plus. Since the content of these DEC documents may have been embedded by its authors with certain formatting attributes and layout specifications that are available as options in DEC WPS Plus, other word processing programs and text editing applications may be unable to open these DEC documents or display its content in human-readable form.
a word of warning
Be careful not to rename the extension on .dx files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
what is a file extension?
A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .dx. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
