what is a .cub file?

Analysis Services is a built-in component of the Microsoft SQL Server software, and this applet uses files stored in the CUB format. Microsoft developed the CUB format as data files created and referenced by Analysis Services. These CUB files are appended with the .cub extension and are also called Analysis Services cube files. "Cubes" are pieces of data stored by Analysis Services into a CUB file, and these "cubes" are exported lines of data from sources used to store structured data. Data schema details associated to the content of a CUB file are also stored in the corresponding CUB file. OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) can be performed using the data in these CUB files. The PivotTable Service program is a component of the Microsoft SQL Server software, and it can be used to access the content of a CUB file. The Microsoft Excel spreadsheet application can also be used to open these CUB files for offline analysis, which means users of Microsoft Windows-based systems with Excel 2010 can open and save these CUB files as offline cubes.

Microsoft SQL Server (2008)

Microsoft SQL Server (2008)

SQL Server 2008, formerly codenamed Katmai, was released on August 6, 2008 and goals to make data self organizing, management self-tuning, and self maintaining with the improvement of SQL Server Always On technologies, to give almost-zero downtime. SQL Server 2008 also includes support for structured and semi-structured data, as well as digital media formats for pictures, audio, video and other multimedia data. In present versions, such multimedia data can be saved as BLOBs (binary large objects), but they are generic bit streams. It also natively supports hierarchical data, and includes T-SQL constructs to directly deal with them, without using recursive queries. Basic awareness of multimedia data will permit specialized functions to be performed on them. According to Paul Flessner, senior Vice President, Server Applications, Microsoft Corp., SQL Server 2008 can be a data storage backend for different varieties of data: XML, email, time/calendar, file, document, spatial, etc as well as perform search, query, analysis, sharing, and synchronization across all data types.

Microsoft also positions Office as a development platform for line-of-business software under the Office Business Applications brand. The current versions are Office 2010 for Windows, released on June 15, 2010; and Office 2011 for Mac OS X, released October 26, 2010.The new Office 2013 (version 15 of the Office suite) is reported to be released around December 2012.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .cub files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .cub. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
