A BibTeX generated bibliography file is used by the BibTeX application, which is a word processing program that implements a BibTeX generated bibliography file into document projects that are created with this software. There are other word processing documents that also implement these BibTeX generated bibliography files into its document project output files. The content of a BibTeX generated bibliography file normally includes citations and references that are associated to the data entered by users into document projects for academic materials and white papers. This means bibliographic indices and reference details are stored in a BibTeX generated bibliography file that is associated to a document created using any word processing program with support for TeX typeface integration. These BibTeX generated bibliography files are embedded with data encoding specifications that allow its content to be stored in the BBL file format. These BibTeX generated bibliography files are appended with the .bbl extension and are also integrated with plain ASCII text and XML-based formatting standards.

BibTeX

BibTeX

Used mainly for formatting lists of references, BibTeX is a reference management software that cites sources in a consistent manner by separating the presentation of the bibliographic information from the bibliographic information itself. It is used together with the LaTeX document preparation system, but in using a third-party tool, BibTeX bibliographies can be included in Word Documents. This software uses a plain-text file format that can be created and altered with the use of an arbitrary text-editor. BibTex files has four different type of entries, the @STRING which defines abbreviations, @COMMENT used for comments that BibTex did not take in regard, @PREAMBLE, defines how the formatting of special text should be, and the Entries in which each single reference declares the type of publication. A BibTex entry contains a citation key, type or the word that comes after @ and a number of tags which describes the several characteristics of a specific BibTex entry. Tags may contain the author, year, title and many others, it may be required on some typed on BibTeX entries and some are optional. For templates, the online BibTeX Converter allows the user to choose from a set of templates which are pre-defined.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .bbl files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .bbl. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
