what is a .acm file?
The ACM file extension is a data file format associated to Audio Compression Manager (ACM), an audio codec for Windows. These files represent sound format used in older computer games like Fallout, Baldur's Gate or American Civil War. ACM files were developed by Bioware and are used by interplay computer games. When ACM files are saved, they are indexed within the audio compression manager driver. They are labeled ACM1, ACM2 until the compression driver can contain up to nine indexes. They can also be converted to other audio file types, such as WAV. At the same time,WAV files also used ACM codec for compression purposes. Audio Compression Manager is already outdated so it was replaced by DirectX and its DirectShow component. Files in ACM format can be opened with BioWare Infinity Engine, Nullsoft Winamp Media Player 5.6 with ACM Plug-in, ACM/WAVC to WAV Converter, and Acm2wav in Microsoft Windows-based systems.

BioWare Infinity Engine
BioWare Infinity Engine
BioWare Infinity Engine is a game engine software that can be used to create isometric role-playing video games. Originally it was developed for Battleground Infinity the codename for a prototype RTS game, but it was re-engineered to be the first installment of the Baldur's Gate series. BioWare, its developer used it for subsequent installment of the game series but at the same time licensed Infinity Engine to Interplay's Black Isle Studios. Using three-quarters perspective with pre-rendered 2D backgrounds and sprite-based characters, the engine is graphically 2D so Baldur's Gate II used OpenGL for drawing acceleration. It provided basis for five Dungeons and Dragons licensed role-playing games with conversion packs and numerous fanmade total conversion RPGs. Infinity Engine was designed for party based adventuring consisting of six characters by default. A more recent open-source implementation of the Infinity engine is the GemRB which could run Baldur's gate, Icewind ale and Planescape: Torment games. It is cross-platformed and can run on Windows, OS X, Linux, Android and more. It a plug-in based design which removes the restrictions and limitations of the Infinity Engine.
Winamp media player 5.6 was developed by the Nullsoft Company and it is a player that provides users with wide capabilities when it comes to organizing and playing their media files. Aside from the variety of features that this player contains and what users can do with this player, Winamp can also come with different plug-ins such as the ACM plug-in. The Winamp Media Player 5.6 with ACM plug-in works just like a normal Winamp player but the ACM plug-in provides additional capabilities for the Winamp player. If the mere Winamp media player 5.6 allows users to play and organize music files and video files, with the ACM plug-in, users can play ACM files that are found in Interplay games. This means that it is possible to associate Winamp with Interplay games already. All the ACM files contained in the Interplay games can be played using the Winamp Media Player 5.6 with the ACM plug-in.
Presented by WAVTools, ACM/WAVC to WAV Converter is a software that allows conversion of an ACM or WAVC file into a WAV file, which stand for Waveform Audio File Format, and considered as among the popular file formats of audios on Windows computers. This software is intended for both IBM and Microsoft audio files that are mostly used on PCs. With this application, it has a variety of additional capabilities too, which include editing files, adding text to speech, and cutting parts of the audio. WAVTools has two particular versions offered that are useful in converting ACM or WAVC to WAV files, namely EZ WAV Tools 1.2, and EZ WAV Converter 1.2. EZ WAV Tools 1.2 is an all-in-one conversion tool of audio files of these particular file formats. It lets you convert ACM to WAV with the option to edit, rip and burn audios which you can later store on your PC, mobile device or CD. In contrast, EZ WAV Converter 1.2 has limited functions which are to mainly convert, join and cut files.
Be careful not to rename the extension on .acm files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
what is a file extension?
A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .acm. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
